A client sits down across from me — sometimes in person on the East End, sometimes through a screen from their kitchen table in Suffolk County — and they tell me some version of the same thing. Why Midlife Is Different

If you're in your forties, fifties, or sixties — whether you're a woman or a man — there's another layer worth understanding. Your sex hormones play a direct role in regulating your stress response, and both shift in midlife, just differently.

For women, estrogen has receptors throughout the parts of the brain responsible for stress regulation. As estrogen shifts during perimenopause and beyond, that regulation can become less steady — part of why so many women feel their stress response has changed even when their external life hasn't.

For men, testosterone plays a related role in buffering cortisol reactivity. It typically begins a gradual decline starting in your thirties, and as that continues through your forties, fifties, and sixties, some of that natural buffering against stress can lessen too — part of why many men in midlife notice their tolerance for stress isn't what it used to be, even when nothing else has changed.
